1. As the name implies, a car's power is generated by the two front wheels with a front-wheel drive (FWD) train. In this setup, the front wheels provide locomotion, and they also steer. Power comes through a differential, which sends the power through two half-shafts to the vehicle’s wheels. These types of drivetrains work well in icy conditions.

2. Power is generated by the back wheels in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) vehicle. Here again, a differential plays an essential role in distributing power using half-shafts to the back wheels. Cars with this type of drivetrain are typically not designed for snow and ice.

3. In an all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle, all four wheels receive power. There are four differentials in this type of drivetrain that enable this function.

4. A four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle functions much the same as an all-wheel drive car, but the system is typically more durable because these vehicles are often designed to travel in rough terrain and off-road conditions.
